    Anti-Victimisation Initiative
A £1.2 million project has been set up to tackle hate crime and to encourage people to report incidents of hate crime which include domestic violence, homophobic and racist incidents. The initiative is a partnership of nine local organisations including Brighton & Hove police, the City Council, the Domestic Violence Forum, the Safety Forum for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered Community, Brighton & Hove's Racial Harassment Forum, the Women's Refuge Project, Victim Support and East Sussex Probation Service, who are all committed to support victims and ensure offenders are prosecuted.

The initiative is made up of two teams, the investigative unit, which is based in the Police station, contactable on (01273) 665800 or (01273) 665502, and also a community-based team who can be contacted as follows: m'Bye Babacourr (01273) 291097 or Paul Stewart on (01273) 291090.

Senegambia Foundation
The Senegambia Foundation is a project based in Brighton & Hove. There are two main aims:
  • to set up and run a community clothes recycling project, providing free or cheap clothing to people in need.
  • to provide a focus of activity for members of the Senegalese and Gambian community in Brighton & Hove.

Community clothes recycling project
Clothes recycling is a valuable initiative , as on the one hand there is a lot of unwanted clothing and on the other a high level of need. We collect unwanted clothes from Charity shops and other donations. These are washed, ironed and sorted collectively by members.

Clothes are then:

  • distributed to people in need within the Senegalese and Gambian community in Brighton and Hove.
  • sold at very cheap prices at car-boot sales, tabletop sales, Charity events, social events, etc.
  • any clothes surplus to requirements are then sent to Senegal and Gambia.

Our long term aim is to have shop-front premises.

Focus of activity for the Senegalese and Gambian community
There is no central focus for the Senegalese and Gambian community in Brighton and Hove. Members of the community are scattered throughout the town, and do not have the opportunity to meet each other. As a result, they are very isolated in an unfamiliar and sometimes hostile culture, without any support networks. Women, who generally work in the home are particularly isolated.

The community clothes recycling project is an opportunity for Senegambia Foundation members to meet and get involved in a lively and useful project. The Project provides a safe, welcoming environment in which people can meet, develop friendships and support networks, gain confidence and learn new skills.

We aim to support and develop activities as suggested by group members, such as helping to form baby-sitting networks, providing welfare and benefit rights advice and organising social events.

If you are interested in learning more about the Foundation, please call Mr Fadera, 07880 664264 or Mr Touray 07940 112253.
